In Pirates 2, the Black Pearl was a set built from the hull up on top of a barge, which was towed into position for filming.
In Pirates 3, the Black Pearl was built around an existing 109-foot-long ship named Sunset; which was docked in Bayou La Batre, Alabama.
According to Greg Callas, the construction coordinator on Pirates 2, his construction crew built four masts and a complete set of sails for the Black Pearl. But to complete the look of the ship's sails, masts and crow's nest, the artists at Industrial Light and Magic took over.
According to John Dexter, the supervising art director on Pirates 3, “we got engineers involved and our marine department, who let us know what we could and could not do with its design. Then we hired set designers, model makers and illustrators to help us flesh those ideas out and get them ready for construction. We built the ship simultaneously in Los Angeles and Grand Bahama Island.”
